OK, so we all know that the rap game is SUPER Saturated! I covered that. But I think I may have missed some other stuff. THERE ARE TOO MANY OTHER FOLKS IN THIS GAME AS WELL!
It’s time for some of you find a trade! I’m just saying…there are…
Too Many PR chicks, with not enough contacts outside of Atlanta (this originally said “…not enough groupies”, but my BIG WIG DJ friend said there were always enough groupies! LOL)
Too many marketing companies, not enough marketing plans
Too many mix tapes, not enough good albums
Too many mix tape DJ’s, not enough real DJ’s (I’m mean can you mix the songs so that they blend from track to track?)
Too many beat makers, not enough producers
Too many recycled beats, not enough originality
Too many lawyers running record labels, not enough record executives that care about the music in the music industry
Too many Independent Record Label CEO’s, not enough people who know the music business
Too many promotions companies, with too much promo stuff just sitting in their offices
Too many showcases, not enough A&R’s attending that are looking for talent
Too many radio stations, but not enough good music on the radio
Too many mass merchants, not enough real record stores
Too many rappers that own labels, with not many quality artist on their roster
Too many opinions about music online, not enough true music critics
Did I miss anything??? If you think so please feel free to add a comment. I welcome them all!!!

Too many mix tapes, not enough good albums
Too many mix tape DJ’s, not enough real DJ’s (I’m mean can you mix the songs so that they blend from track to track?)

Great post and all so very true. As a director, I’d add that there are too many wanna be directors with no real vision or talent. With the popularity of youtube and the likes, there’s way too many garbage videos poppin’ up that have no creativity or originality.
Interesting post…I agree but I would add what is the solution? You are insisting that people NOT follow their dreams and I can’t co-sign that. I believe the best talent (directors, A&Rs, DJs, rappers, etc.) will always rise to the top. But experience is the best teacher so how does one get that and create credibilty?
Good post. I agree with a lot of what you said. There are too many “experts” and not enough apprentices, especially in my field. It amazes me how many publicists sprout up daily with their own firm and no prior PR experience. They’ve never interned with anyone and have no idea how to pitch a client to media. If they can get you in on a VIP list every now and then, they call themselves a publicists but where are their press rooms and press clips? Can they land a media placement solely by a pitch or did they have to pay for an ad too, if so than that’s called a paid placement…advertising not publicity.
Sorry to rant but I agree with your analysis. Happy New Year! Keep it going, I enjoy your posts and make them required reading for my clients.
